Department Divisions

The LSU Police Department offers a variety of resources for crime deterrence and response. LSU Police Officers work closely with other local law enforcement agencies, as well as with the Baton Rouge Fire Department and East Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services (EMS), who provide fire and emergency medical services to LSU.

Uniform Patrol and Mountain Bike Patrol

Uniform Patrol is the largest division in the department. The duties of these Officers is to proactively patrol the properties of LSU and respond to calls for service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Uniform Patrol provides superior police services to the faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the LSU campus. These Officers will be proactive and highly visible within the LSU community. The goals of the unit are to provide police services and anti-crime patrols to the community.

The Mountain Bike Patrol Unit also conducts proactive patrols and is able to maneuver into places on campus that a patrol unit cannot go. Mountain Bike Officers also raise awareness about bicycle safety and provide resources regarding bicycle laws and bicycle safety.

Community Outreach Officers

The Community Outreach Division provides educational services, in regards to safety and security, within the community. This is done through safety awareness presentations, posts made to social media, or simply by being visible throughout campus. These Officers partner with other law enforcement agencies/safety partners in participating in events, on and off campus, that promote safety. They also work closely with student organizations to help close the gap between law enforcement and the community.

These Officers also schedule and host two of our women's self-defense classes that are made available throughout the academic year.

Community Outreach Officers present at all orientation sessions, where they provide valuable information to students and parents in an effort to keep our community safe. They engage with the LSU community daily by performing community check-ins, answering questions and addressing concerns. All of this is done in an effort to engage with community members proactively, and not in a reactionary way. These Officers will continue to develop new ways to provide positive safety education.

Motor Officers

Also known as the Traffic Unit, these Officers respond, assist, and provide services for all traffic crashes, hit-and-runs, and traffic law enforcement needs of the LSU community. They also provide escorts for events, if requested.

K-9 Officers

These Officers provide the University and campus community with safe, timely resolutions of bomb threats, suspicious package concerns, threats from actual hazardous devices, and the detection and mitigation of body worn or carried explosives. To respond to bomb threat locations, preventative patrol, assist other law enforcement agencies, or sweep venues hosting special events/sporting events.
