GeauxTeach STEM

Enhance your degree with GeauxTeach STEM

GeauxTeach STEM allows students to pursue an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics AND earn secondary teaching certification at the same time. No additional hours are required since elective hours are used for education courses. Upon completing the GeauxTeach STEM program, you will have a BS degree in science or math AND be both certified and highly qualified to teach in that subject area. Although teaching is the goal for many of our students, some choose to pursue this concentration to become a distinguished communicator and to set themselves apart from other students who plan to enroll in graduate or professional schools.

GeauxTeach STEM Pathway Descriptions

Undergraduate Certification

Typically, GeauxTeach Undergraduate Certification attracts first-year or sophomore students pursuing majors in:

  • biology
  • chemistry
  • physics, or
  • mathematics.

This student is on track in their degree area and wants to spend their final semester conducting a traditional student-teaching experience where they work with a mentor to hone their teaching skills before they graduate and enter the real world.

This option is for serious students who feel strongly about earning and using their teaching certification.

Alternative Certification

The typical Alternative Certification candidate is a junior or senior majoring in any STEM-related field, recognizing the potential for expanded career options after graduation.

This student:

  • prefers not to extend their graduation date.
  • is open to taking additional courses for practical and theoretical experience in education before committing to the profession.
  • chooses not to follow the traditional student teaching route.
  • opts for graduate classes for support while teaching in their own classroom.

Alternative Certification for Computer Science

The Alternative Certification for Computer Science option is ideal for a Computer Science major interested in transitioning to teaching, either right after graduation or later in their career.

Students in this pathway take the CS with a Second Discipline: Education concentration offered in the Division of Computer Science and Engineering.

As with the general Alternative Certification route, teacher certification requirements are completed following graduation in a 1-year paid internship.
