Overview
The Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS) is Louisiana’s state geological survey and the premier geoscience research and information center at LSU. LGS serves state agencies, industry, and the public by providing data, maps, and expertise on Louisiana’s geology, natural resources, and geologic hazards.
What LGS does
- Conducts applied geoscience research on topics such as energy and mineral resources, water, and coastal and environmental geology.
- Produces and maintains geologic maps, subsurface datasets, and related publications that support planning, exploration, and risk reduction across the state.
- Provides technical assistance and information to agencies, local governments, educators, industry, and citizens with questions about Louisiana’s geology and resources.
Resources and collections
- Operates the LGS Resource Center, including a core repository, laboratory facilities, and a well log library that preserve and provide access to key subsurface data.
- Offers public information series, maps, and other educational materials for teachers, students, and the general public interested in Louisiana geology.
