There are three ways to volunteer with the LSUMNS:
Research Volunteer: Research volunteers work alongside graduate students or curators to help out with lab research projects pending space availability. You can choose to work with mammals, birds, fish, or amphibians & reptiles. Occasionally volunteers will have the opportunity to publish their research with the scientist they worked under.
Specimen Preparation Volunteer: Specimen preparation volunteers help to prepare research specimens (mainly mammal and bird study skins) for the collections.
Outreach Volunteer: Outreach Volunteers work alongside our Outreach Coordinator to help with our outreach/education events. This could include community events or museum tours.
How to apply!
Potential volunteers should email the curator they wish to work with directly. You can find a list of our curators and their contact information using our directory.
Volunteering with the LSUMNS is dependent on availability and space.
For more information call the museum at 225-578-2855 or email at email@example.com.
Volunteers will receive training about how to perform their duties at the Museum. Individualized training will be provided for new volunteers to assure their performance meets Museum expectations.
Rewarding Work Experience
Volunteers are encouraged to take on tasks that meet their personal goals. The Museum is committed, within its available resources, to maintaining a pleasant work environment for volunteers.
Museum volunteers may request visitor parking permits from the Visitor Center on the corner of Highland Road and Dalrymple Avenue (225-578-5030). Visitor parking permits entitle volunteers to park in any visitor parking lot or any unrestricted street parking for free.
Free semester parking passes can be issued to volunteers who keep a regular schedule at the Museum. This pass entitles volunteers to park in any visitor parking lot or any unrestricted street parking spot without having to stop at the Visitor Center each time they visit. Pay parking is also available. Museum volunteers may pay one dollar an hour up to eight hours in any pay parking lot on campus. Metered parking is available at the Visitor Center and on Tower Road. The Museum cannot reimburse volunteers for parking expenses.
Museum volunteers who come to the Museum in the mornings may consider arriving shortly before 8 a.m. for greater parking availability.
